First, Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com's founder and CEO did not live or grow up with his biological father. His real name is “Jeffery Preston Jorgensen” and “Bezos” is basically his stepfather’s last name. His biological father owns a bike shop and still works there even though his son is a billionaire. This is sth Jeff Bezos shares with Steve Jobs.

He loves simplicity and keeping things short. That’s why he called Amazon’s “Personalization” team “P13N”. Since in the word “Personalization” there are 13 letters between “P” and “N”; he chose to call it “P13N”. Same thing happened with the “Algorithms” team; it’s called “A9”. Google these two teams and you’ll find they are still called so to this day.

Jeff hates PowerPoint presentations. To this day, if you host a meeting at Amazon you have to prepare a six-page document, more like a press release, and everyone attending the meeting has to read it before actually starting the meeting. Also, Jeff cares about customers very much; to the extent that in every meeting he attends there has to be an empty chair that basically represents “the customer voice”.

Speaking about customers, Jeff loves them so very much; all he cares about is being able to provide the LOWEST prices for them no matter what. To that end, he goes by a very strict rule of never spending money on things that don’t matter to the customer. So, at Amazon, even executives fly on economy and never business class. If you want to customize t-shirts for your team you have to do that on your own expense. If you invite your team to a restaurant Amazon will never pay for that either.

For 18 years, Jeff insisted on calling it “Amazon.com” not “Amazon”; mainly to force people to remember the URL! It wasn't until 2012 that their logo on the website was changed to simply “Amazon”, something very few people even noticed [I never noticed that :)].

Amazon struggled so much financially and its original business model was never profitable. It took them so many years, more than a decade, to begin to make a tangible profit. Their focus has always been providing the LOWEST prices for their customers even if that meant no profit; they play for the long term.

Working conditions at Amazon are not optimal; salaries and compensation packages are very modest, work-life balance is not even an idea and if you try to bring it up you may get fired. So many employees leave Amazon early and don’t even make it to the second year there, but still it is a very competitive and challenging work place, and they mostly stay for that. Amazon is still trying to compete with Google and Apple to get the best Software Engineers out there :)

And lastly, again, Amazon loves its customers very much; one early Thanksgiving in 1999, when their systems weren't that mature, and when Pokemon was everyone’s favorite cartoon, Amazon put together a search team that spent 3 whole days looking for a single box inside an 18,000-square-foot warehouse. That was a missing box of “Jigglypuff” Pokemon toys, that many customers ordered that holiday and that got misplaced in the facility! Amazon had to simply fulfill their customer promise! :)

وداعاً، يا أثقل من رضوى

أنا حزينةٌ جداً - بشكلٍ شخصيّ - لرحيل الكبيرة رضوى عاشور فجر هذا اليوم..

عرفتُ اسمها منذ فترةٍ بعيدة؛ عرفتُها أكثر أنها "والدة تميم البرغوثي"، "وزوجة مريد البرغوثي" وكلاهما شاعرٌ وكاتب؛ لكنّ القراءةَ لها كانت دائماً مشروعاً مؤجلاً بالنسبة لي، إلى أن قرأتُ رائعتها "ثلاثية غرناطة" من سنة وبضعة شهور، فعرفتُ أني فاتني الكثير بتأجيلي لقراءة أعمالها سابقاً.

فوراً اتجهتُ إلى قراءة "الطنطورية"؛ التي وشّحتها بإهداءٍ مقتضب إلى زوجها مريد، واكتشفتُ فيها قطعةً من الجمال أخذت تشدّني صفحةً تلو الأخرى. فقد عرضت قضية قرية "الطنطورة" الفلسطينية التي مسحها الكيان الصهيوني في 1948 وهجّر أهلها بجمالٍ منقطع النظير. وأزعمُ أنها قد خلّدت ذكر هذه القرية بأروع القوالب الإنسانية للقادم من الزمن رغم أنف المحتل الذي سعى إلى طمسها بغوغائيته.

"أثقل من رضوى - مقاطع من سيرة ذاتية" كان أحدث، ومع الأسف "آخر"، كتبها الذي صدر في 2013، وفيه تعرفتُ عن كثب إلى هذه الإنسانة الجميلة؛ تعرفتُ فيه على مشوار حياتها الشيّق والصعب والمليء بالأحداث. عرفتُ كمَّ الناس الذين أحبوها وتتلمذوا على يدها أستاذةً في قسم اللغة الإنجليزية في جامعة عين شمس، عرفتُ كم عانت الأمرَّين بعد أن حرمتها السلطة من وجود زوجها "الفلسطيني" معها في مصر وقامت بإبعاده لتعيش هي الدور الأصعب، وتحمل مسؤوليةً مضاعفة في تربية ابنهما طوال الوقت.

عرفتُ حبها للثورة وتعرفتُ من خلالها على ثورة الطلاب في الجامعات المصرية وسمعتُ حكاياتٍ عن ميدان التحرير في تلك الأيام الجميلة التي خلت - وها هي الآن تفارق الحياة بعد يومين فقط من إعلان براءة الطاغية حسني مبارك، فأيَّة مفارقة! - ولكن، استشعرتُ غصتها لأنها لم تستطع النزول إلى الميدان في أوج الثورة أو حتى التواجد في مصر، بسبب ذلك الورم الخبيث الذي بدأ شيئاً فشيئاً يُنهكها ويُثقل كاهلها، وكان عليها أن تسعى لعلاجه في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، في رحلة علاجٍ طويلة وشاقة مع زوجها وابنها.

عندما قرأتُ كلَّ تلك التفاصيل، شعرتُ أنني أعرف هذه الجميلة القوية عن قرب وبشكلٍ شخصيّ، أنا التي لم أقابلها يوماً ولو أني تمنيتُ ذلك. قالت مرةً أنه لا بأس إن أرسلنا لها سطراً أو سطرين لو أعجبنا ما نقرؤه لها. وكنتُ دائماً أؤجل الفكرة، واكتفيتُ بكتابة عرضٍ متواضع جداً عن كتابها الأخير في أحد المواقع. ولكن، ها أنا الآن، أجلس وأستذكر الجمال الذي منحتنا إياه؛ فأعبر لكِ عن محبتي وأسعى لتعويض ما فاتني، وأدعو لكِ بالرحمة والراحة.

قلتِ في "أثقل من رضوى" أنّ "رضوى" هو الاسم الذي منحه لك جدك لأمك، وهو اسم جبلٍ يقع قرب المدينة المنورة تضرب فيه العرب المثل في الرسوخ فتقول "أثقل من رضوى". وأنا لا أرى اسماً أنسب تعنونين به مشوار حياتك التي كنتِ فيها راسخةً ماضيةً بعزم، مليئةً بالحياة، رغم كل تلك المصاعب التي أثقلت كاهلكِ الصغير.

سأعود وأقرأ المزيد من كتبك دائماً، ولكن، سيحزنني أنه لن يكون هناك أعمالٌ لاحقة. لن أقول عزاؤنا في أعمال زوجكِ وابنكِ من بعدك؛ فمحلُّك سيبقى شاغراً أبداً، وسنفتقد دوماً تلك الضحكة البهية بين سطور كتاباتك. ولكنها سنّةُ الحياة، التي امتثلتِ لها أنتِ أيضاً، فإنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون.
